Relentless Pursuit Inside the Escape from Dannemora New York State Largest Manhunt Charles E Guess 9781457555954 Books

I had to stop reading this book about half way through. This was not so much about the escape and recapture of two dangerous fugitives as it was about the author's life story. Granted, Mr. Guess had a long and illustrious career and a little back-story is helpful for the overall picture, but there was far too much back-story in the book. I didn't purchase the book because I was interested in the author's memoirs. I got to the point where I was skipping the "filler" chapters of the author's exploits and going straight to the chapters involving the prison break. I may pick the book up again at some point or continue skipping chapters, but for now, the book is on the shelf.

Relentless Pursuit Inside the Escape from Dannemora New York State Largest Manhunt Charles E Guess 9781457555954 Books Reviews

Very detailed, however, author has a tendency to praise himself very highly.
Interesting story, well written and good integration of personal history.
I found the author's use of italics, underline s and bold to stress certain words and phrases to be annoying.
While I applaud and are appreciate Mr. Guess’s illustrious career in the military and law enforcement, his writing (and I suppose, his choice of editors) could use some tweaking! However, his self-esteem seems to be extraordinary. This book was sold as the story of the escape and capture of the two Dannemora escapees but, in reality, was Mr. Guess’s autobiography. If I were to estimate, I’d say that, at best, maybe a third of the book is actually about the escape and capture. really needs to either vet or describe the books they sell better!
This book is primarily a self aggrandizing autobiography, and could easily be reduced to half its length. Little of its length has to do with the subject represented on the cover. All of the people introduced in the book seem to be close and dear friends, and they all engage in mutual backslapping and praise, from his high school days, through his Army time, and unto his final retirement from the NY State Police. It must be noted that none of these entities collapsed after he left. Obviously I do not recommend this book, and would never buy it again. There are a couple of chapters that are interesting, but you have to "fast forward" through all the BS between them to endure to the end.
I wanted to read only about the escape and capture of the two inmates. And that is what the title of the book implies the book is about. However, there are many chapters about the personal history of the author. In fact, it is really a biography of his life in addition to the story of how the two inmates were captured. I wish the title had indicated that, so that I could have purchased a different book.
I was disappointed in this book because it also includes the author's career prior to this infamous escape and other incidents that took place in the author's career as well. The end of the book goes into some detail as to how the inmates managed to finagle their way out of the prison. The book includes nineteen pages of photographs most of which dealt with the escape from Dannemora prison. I would suggest you purchase one of the other books on this subject.
An outstanding book that documents the cause of the escapes and details of the investigation and capture of escaped inmates and the prison employees that aided this escape
Also this book is an excellent of the leadership skills needed in a major inter agency investigation and manning, which was displayed by Major Charles E. Guess, N.Y.S.P. He can be proud of his career and of his outstanding accomplishments. His retirement from the N.Y.S.P. is a great loss to that agency and the State of New York. Highly recommend this book.
