While the author's writing is superb,the type of violence in this Mystic fiction is quite heavy for me personally and tainted the whole experience. The story has its great moments and for those whose tolerance for some gruesome violence in this type of read is more accepting, you will likely love this interesting tale. I gave the book 4 stars because of the author's writing and creativity in crafting this tale. I don't shun violence in general, as I am an Action movie buff etc. However, please read and judge for yourself as with all things it is a matter of opinion and personal preference.

Many people adore this book so take this with a grain of salt. For me personally, it was too fairy-tale-ish with a lot of redundancy.
I have read all of Holly Lynn Payne's books, as she is a very gifted, engaging author, who always seems to expand my soul onto a new journey. As with other novels, her extensive research is evident. But wIth Damascena, she has far exceeded any of her other writings. Damascena is a treasure to find in any friend's bookcase. I once again savored every page! Thank you, Holly, for continuing to give so openly of yourself to we readers.
I loved this book. The writing, as with all of Holly Payne's books, is superb--such beautiful, poetic prose. And the story is wonderfully crafted, befitting the mystical theme of roses and Rumi. This novel transports you to another time and place, even another reality, one of magic and mysticism. There is much heartache and pain in the book, but it is without a doubt a story for the soul. #booklovesunday
A beautiful story. I was quickly transported into the world of Damascena, Rumi, and Shams...and the paths of everyone they crossed along the way; I enjoyed every moment. Holly truly is a gifted story teller, enabling me to feel the emotions, hear the voices, and become engrossed in the journeys of each character. This is a book that you can't wait to read at the end of your day. And I'm inspired to read more by this talented author!
Holly Payne is a gifted writer who tells such an engaging story of love, perseverance and forgiveness. I couldn't put this book down! I loved that it takes place in a time that I knew so little about.
I am going through my own journey of spiritual discovery. While 'Damascena' is not the type of book I would have picked up on my own my chance meeting with the author led me to read it. I am so glad I did. 'Damascena' is simultaneously a great tale, provides insight into another time and place, and is a spiritually transforming journey.

The writing is both clear and lyrical. I had a hard time putting the book down, not because it is a 'page turner' but because I didn't want to leave the sweetness of its embrace.

Like many great books, 'Damascena' opens more doors than it closes and will lead me to explore new things that I might otherwise have missed.
Holly Lynn Payne is actively changing the way the reader feels thinks and behaves. This is how writing should be used! Reading DAMASCENA is a process of attaining spiritual fulfillment as lifting weights is a process of attaining a stronger physical body. Please read this book. You will be a better person as a result of having done so. Find beauty, love and peace.
